The official journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Higher Education Press Engineering is an international open-access journal that was launched by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in 2015. Its aims are to provide a high-level platform where cutting-edge advancements in engineering R&D, current major research outputs, and key achievements can be disseminated and shared; to report progress in engineering science, discuss hot topics, areas of interest, challenges, and prospects in engineering development, and consider human and environmental well-being and ethics in engineering; to encourage engineering breakthroughs and innovations that are of profound economic and social importance, enabling them to reach advanced international standards and to become a new productive force, and thereby changing the world, benefiting humanity, and creating a new future. We are interested in: (1) News & Highlights— This section covers engineering news from a global perspective and includes updates on engineering issues of high concern; (2) Views & Comments— This section is aimed at raising academic debates in scientific and engineering community, encouraging people to express new ideas, and providing a platform for the comments on some comprehensive issues; (3) Research— This section reports on outstanding research results in the form of research articles, reviews, perspectives, and short communications regarding critical engineering issues, and so on. All manuscripts must be prepared in English, and are subject to a rigorous and fair peer-review process. Accepted papers will immediately appear online, and will be translated into Chinese. Background The CAE is the highest honorary and consultative academic institution in engineering science and technology in China. It consists of more than 800 CAE members, and is devoted to promoting the development of engineering science. Academic research spearheads the development of engineering science and technology. To better lead engineering development and to provide a high-level international platform for engineering exchanges, the CAE worked with world-renowned engineering experts and scholars to launch Engineering. This initiative has received continuous responses and strong support from UNESCO, the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) member academies, and celebrated experts and scholars. Special Issue on Sustainable Development and Recycling of Polymeric MaterialsDía de Entrega: 2025-09-30Compared with metal and inorganic non-metallic materials, organic polymeric materials have become the fastest-growing materials among the three major materials. However, many polymeric materials are difficult to be recycled after disposal, leading to massive accumulation of their waste. The existing most of recycling technologies display high energy consumption, low utilization rate and low value of recycled products, as well as the problem of “treating waste and producing waste,” causing serious ecological and environmental problems and waste of resources. This special issue “Sustainable Development and Recycling of Polymeric Materials” focuses on the frontiers of polymeric materials science and engineering. It is to carry out efficient catalytic degradation and green transformation of the existing large volume and wide range of waste polymeric materials to realize upcycling. Closely relevant topics beyond this scope mentioned above are also expected. Special Issue on Optoelectronics Multifunctional Materials for Energy & SensingDía de Entrega: 2025-09-30Optoelectronics multifunctional materials are pivotal in the domain of photoelectric conversion. Over the recent years, advancements in dimensional control, elemental doping, interfacial engineering, and structural and defect engineering have facilitated the development of innovative photoelectric materials, which have been found extensive applications across diverse sectors, including detection and sensing, display and imaging, catalytic and degradation, and the harnessing of new energy sources. However, addressing the engineering challenges of optoelectronic functional materials, such as enhancing material stability, environmental adaptability, eco-friendliness, recyclability, and meeting the system integration needs for flexibility and wearability, will accelerate the transition of these materials from the experimental stage to practical engineering applications. This special issue “Optoelectronics Multifunctional Materials for Energy & Sensing” focuses on the frontiers and engineering applications. of optoelectronics multifunctional materials science. Special Issue on Energy Transition’s Technical Pathways, Risks and EquityDía de Entrega: 2025-12-31The energy transition requires the establishment of clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy systems but also a comprehensive green transformation of socioeconomic development. This includes issues like coordinated control of pollutants and greenhouse gases, enhanced equity and social welfare, and regional collaborative governance. However, the energy transition process is also highly complex and influenced by additional non-technical factors such as political and regulatory systems, climate policies, global economic trends, technological innovation, international cooperation, geopolitics, and public acceptance. Designing energy transition pathways that balance risks and enhance equity has become a global challenge. Special Issue on Next Gen-AI Enabled New Type of Power SystemDía de Entrega: 2025-12-31The new type of power system is a major strategic requirement for countries worldwide to achieve the "dual carbon" climate action goals. The key lies in introducing advanced information technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to realize digital and intelligent transformation, thus accommodating large-scale distributed resources. Among these, the empowerment of power systems by Next Gen-AI has been rated as one of the "Top 10 Global Engineering Frontiers for 2023" in Energy and Mining Engineering. It has become a critical direction with significant impact and guiding influence on the future development of smart grids and has been included in the key technical areas of major national research programs worldwide. Special Issue on Environmental Frontiers for Water-Energy NexusDía de Entrega: 2025-12-31Water and energy are essential for human activity, which are closely interacted. Significant amounts of water are needed in almost all energy generation processes, e.g., generating hydropower, cooling power plants, extracting and processing fuels, growing biofuel crops. Meanwhile, the water sector needs energy to extract, treat, and transport water. Population growth and climate change placing additional demands, extra uncertainties on water and energy, and further challenging water and energy management by increasing water variability and intensifying weather events. However, the current planning is often made based on isolated considerations of water and energy without taking into account their mutual constraints. Therefore, this special issue is initiated in hoping to bring in new insights into water-energy nexus and to discover novel strategies supporting local and global sustainable development goals.
